I am old enough to remember his time as City manager, albeit rather vaguely. From memory he got us promoted without much backing from the club, and then kept us up. His defection to Villa seemed like treachery at the time, and worked out badly for him, but City were a basket case then and in hindsight he was better than a lot of the managers we have had.
I never felt as negatively towards McNeill as some other City fans of my generation do, and time does lend perspective. He did a decent job in difficult times, and got us promoted on a shoestring.
RIP.
RIP Billy. As a kid he was one of my favourite managers.
He did a decent enough job, Tolmie was one of my early heroes. You can't really blame McNeill wanting to escape Swales. But not wise to swap him for deadly Doug. I bet he enjoyed retirement after dealing with them two. RIP.
great days at maine rd when we got promoted under billy..even eddie large was on the bench that day!!
