Title: The 'Epic' transfer rumour thread
Post by: Rowley Birkin QC on June 09, 2016, 01:46:22
OK - by all means start your own threads on particular players, but I've just noticed we don't have one place to collate all the nonsense where we can keep track of it! (Assuming, that is, that you wish to experience the unsubstantiated ramblings and fantasies of a lot of pissed footie journalists - too distracted by the Euro's)

So here we go...

So far we have signed Ilkay Gundogan (midfielder, 25, Borussia Dortmund)

We appear to be serious about Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (striker and part-time winger, 26, Borussia Dortmund)

The Guardian thinks it has a well sourced story that we are after Aymeric Laporte (defender, 22, Athletic Bilbao) in spite of him currently nursing a broken leg and ankle.

But the Guardian also thinks our interest in Paul Pogba (midfielder, 23, Juventus) is rapidly waning.

His fault for buggering off - and besides, I started a similar thread to this a couple of summers ago (about transfer rumours) which ran for weeks so he doesn't have a monopoly.

Can't say I've seen John Stones' name mentioned much - except perhaps in the MEN - but then I have been living under a stone  ;)  recently.

OK - let's stick him in -

John Stones (defender, 22, Everton)

There's going to be a lot of this - players we are apparently interested in immediately being linked to the rags - and vice-versa.

The media are going to flog this Pep v Jose thing for all it's worth.

Yes - already some signs of where Pep might be trying to take us. And I'm pleasantly surprised we seem to be active in the market nice and early (in spite of the distraction of the Euros).

The John Stones thing looks like it's on. Certainly more serious than I first thought.

I see Liverpool (  :D ) have already had a bid rejected for Leroy Sané...

According to The Daily Star's "German sources" Pep is very keen on him. OK, let's put him in the frame as well -

Leroy Sané (winger or attacking mid, 20, Schalke)

Ilkay Gundogan (midfielder, 25, Borussia Dortmund)

Plausible rumours -
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (striker and part-time winger, 26, Borussia Dortmund)
Leroy Sané (winger or attacking mid, 20, Schalke)
Oleksandr Zinchenko (attacking midfielder, 19, Ufa)
Aymeric Laporte (defender, 22, Athletic Bilbao)
John Stones (defender, 22, Everton)

Of the "Plausible rumours" Oleksandr Zinchenko may be a done deal, but not confirmed by City yet.

Cant we buy someone who hasnt got a broken leg

Aymeric Laporte could finally become a Manchester City player in the next week, with Marca believing a conclusion to this drawn-out saga is near.

According to the Spanish newspaper, Athletic Bilbao are now working under the idea that their prized asset will soon be wearing the sky blue of Manchester City. City have been linked with Laporte for over a year, but it was a story last December, in which Mundo Deportivo claimed Laporte, Gündoğan and Thiago would be Pep’s three main targets at City, that really kickstarted the rumour.

Laporte has had an offer since March to join Guardiola at the Etihad, but his strong loyalty to the Basque club has raised questions about whether he’d make the big move. Athletic have been due to offer the 22-year-old an improved contract, but Marca say there is ‘no progress’ on that front and his club seem to believe he is Manchester-bound.

A serious injury to Laporte also cast further doubt about the deal happening, but having monitored his recovery, City appear satisfied and have not been put off. Marca claim Laporte is fully aware that if he turns down Pep Guardiola this summer, he may never get the chance again.

The story states that City hope to sign Laporte in the next week and will activate his â,¬50 million (£39.46 million) release clause. One of Europe’s most sought-after young defenders, Laporte would be City’s second high-level signing of the summer after the £20 million capture of Ä°lkay GündoÄŸan from Borussia Dortmund

Second string (?  ;)  ) goal keeper might be Víctor Valdés (keeper, 34, technically still a rag I think)

Not sure how seriously to take this one. It makes sense because of the Pep connection when he was at Barcelona, but could be just the journalists joining the dots.

Some mutterings in the Italian press about Pep's supposed interest in Stephan Lichtsteiner. Not sure whether the Italian press is any better informed than the UK's... and he is getting on a bit.

A little more solid perhaps is the admission by Celta Vigo president Carlos Mouriño that he won't be able to hang on to Nolito this summer. Barcelona (probably the favourites to get him), Spuds and City are apparently chasing him (14.3 million pound release clause).

Lots of half-arsed rumours doing the rounds at the moment, but I think we can stick the above two in as "possibles" -

Stephan Lichtsteiner (right back, 32, Juventus)
Nolito (left winger, 29, Celta Vigo)

The latter interest might just be insurance in case the Leroy Sané deal falls through - which according to some reports, is moving closely.

Is Nolito any good? I don't know much about him.

I see we've "missed" out on laporte while I've been away...

I hope we go for a cb that's around 28. Get a solid 5 seasons out of him and should be well developed by that age.

Yes, he's good.  Came from Barca's youth system and had a year at Granada before Celta so I watched him weekly.  He has a tasty free kick on him, scores from outside the box and has good vision and work rate.  At Granada he looked a real touch of class, for us I reckon he'd be a useful addition.  Could be a very good bit of business, though it wouldn't be an exciting signing.

A seemingly well informed (and often reliable on football matters) UK Telegraph says City are definitely looking to boost 'home grown' representation. Torygraph links us with -

Andros Townsend (winger, 24, Newcastle Utd)
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (midfielder / winger, 22, Arsenal)

Not sure what to make of these two. Townsend was one of the few stand outs in an otherwise dire Newcastle side and Oxlade-Chamberlain is a decent enough squad player but surely we can only interpret these as back-up options? Neither are prolific scorers (only 7 goals in 100 appearances in Oxlade-Chamberlain's case). From their perspective you'd have to imagine they'd be worried about being long term bench warmers.   We've also apparently been sniffing around Walcott, but he is set on staying at Arsenal.

Definitely splinters for those if they joined. Do you see them as improving us? A wage with no effect except fulfilling the quota. Should not the young home grown players have the chance.

Local media today reporting we have signed Aaron Mooy (central midfielder, 25, Melbourne City).

A three year deal and in return Melbourne get Luke Brattan (who Manchester City loaned to Bolton last season) and Anthony Caceres' loan to Melbourne gets extended. Mooy was on of the A-League's stand out players last season, a bit of a late developer at 25, but presumably destined for a loan to somewhere City can closely monitor him?

Lichsteiner.

We also have a 33 yr old RB in Sagna.

in my head, it doesn't make any business/playing sense at all, I'm Face palming atm if this is true!!!

I don't know who we should go for but surely, surely surely surely, we shold be looking at a player who could play at leat 5 years for s given this could be Sagna's last season!?

We've already discused Van Der Wiel as a free transfer potential. I don't know why he fell out with of favour at PSG... but gotta be worth more of a punt!

Nolito confirmed as signed.

Friday recap...

Signed -
Ilkay Gundogan (midfielder, 25, Borussia Dortmund)
Aaron Mooy (central midfielder, 25, Melbourne City) - almost certainly going out on loan
Nolito (left winger, 29, Celta Vigo)

Possibly still in the mix -
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (striker and part-time winger, 26, Borussia Dortmund)
Leroy Sané (winger or attacking mid, 20, Schalke)
Oleksandr Zinchenko (attacking midfielder, 19, Ufa)
John Stones (defender, 22, Everton)
Víctor Valdés (keeper, 34, technically still a rag)
Stephan Lichtsteiner (right back, 32, Juventus)
Andros Townsend (winger, 24, Newcastle Utd)
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (midfielder / winger, 22, Arsenal)

Probably now off the radar -
Aymeric Laporte (defender, 22, Athletic Bilbao - signed new contract)

Suarez. Good set of teeth on this lad, always hungry. £85 million apparently, for a 29 year old. His wife likes Barcelona, so could be a problem. Apparently his agent is Peps brother.

We need a marquee signing or two.

Luis Suarez... £85m... doubt it'll happen

Toni Kroos - £60m... Again, doubt it'll happen

Bruno Peres - £12m - from Torino

Stones - too much - Everton

But if true, could this be the future line up?

First XI-----------------------------------------Squad/subs

Suarez- Aguero- Nolito  --------------------- Iheanacho - Sterling (Sane?/ Navas)

--Kroos-----Alacantara--  -------------------- - Delph - Silva
-------Gundogan-------- ---------------------- - F'dinho

???------------------Peres --------------------- Sagna, Clichy or Kolarov
----Stones - Vinny------- --------------------- Otamendi + (Denayer?)

----------Hart?------------ --------------------- Bravo?

That's 22, leaving 3 places for HG/CT.

HG &/or CT
Hart HG/CT
Stones HG
Clichy HG
Delph HG
------------------
Denayer? HG & CT
Iheanacho becomes HG & CT from January
+1

I agree, the rumours about Suarez lack bite.

Kroos is possible if Pogba goes to Real Madrid. Even if he left RM, he will have his pick of clubs. There will be an alternative if we dont get Kroos, but doubt they will be on the same level.

Silva a super sub, I hope not.
Title: Re: The 'Epic' transfer rumour thread
Post by: Swiss on July 03, 2016, 17:21:55
Silva is more a swap in and out depending on fitness and form of himself and the other 3. I hope he doesn't get played out wide again.

Could see him play a false 9 though with inside forwards of Aguero & Nolito cutting in from wide?

I think those 2 more advanced midfield positions could interchange personal easily with dave.
Especially if we are to play more possession based again. Rather than set up as a counter attack team with little pace throughout and play possession style...

-----Kroos---Pogba-----

Nice mobile midfield with a wide range of passing and capable of scoring goals.

I'd equally be happy with Alcantara too :D

Making it happen is another thing though!

Iheanacho becomes HG & CT from January

Not sure about this - it depends whether UEFA count it from when the work permit was finally issued (Feb 2015). If so he won't complete 2 years to go on the B list until Feb 2017 and it's possible he could never be club-trained if the 3 year qualifying period ends after his 21st birthday.

He's excellent. Plays in the middle of a back 3 for Juve and Italy, had a decent enough euros up to the penalty shootout fiasco.

£50 mil might be a bit much considering his age but Pep said long ago he was his favourite player.
Title: Re: The 'Epic' transfer rumour thread
Post by: Swiss on July 07, 2016, 20:30:51
You'll have to ask the old lady  ;D

He's played all 5 matches at the Euro's, playing every minute

- Belgium 0 - 2 Italy
Leonardo Bonucci - 7
A sensational pass to set up Emanuele Giaccherini’s goal, combined with that useful ability to attract the ball in defensive situations, made him the standout man of the game for the Azzurri. One of the best around in his position at the moment.

- Italy 1 - 0 Sweden
Leonardo Bonucci - 6

His use of the ball wasn’t as spectacular as it was against Belgium. Sweden seemed a bit more aware of his ability to launch balls over the top. But his defending was assured, contributing to an effort that ensured Sweden had just four shots on goal.

- Italy 0 - 1 ROI (9 changes from the Belgium line up)
Player rating:
Leonardo Bonucci - 5

Was put in an unfair position by Antonio Conte, having to captain the team while ensuring he did not get booked in a meaningless game. That doesn’t excuse his poor touch and subsequent dive that allowed Wes Hoolahan a one-on-one with Sirigu, and losing Robbie Brady for the goal.

- Italy 2 - 0 Spain

Leonardo Bonucci 7.5

That shirt pull on Sergio Ramos could have been a penalty, but the Real man milked it for all it was worth. Truth is, we want Claudio Gentile-like characters at the back who disrupt the opposition as best they can, and who inhabit the grey area. Particularly enthusiastic about his second-hand handball, for which he was somehow not booked.

Italy 1 - 1 Germany (Germany win on Pens)

Leonardo Bonucci - 7

Didn’t put a foot wrong the entire game, and his penalty during normal time was as good as they come. His effort in the shootout wasn’t bad either, but was matched by a very good save from Manuel Neuer.

(Scores & comments from Football-italia.net)

Stats at Euro's
5 apps
1 goal
1 assist
83% pass accuracy
won 2 out of 8 tackles  :o
Won 2 out of 9 Headers  :o

Not really sure what to make of him tbh. Talked of highly but I've never really took much notice of him before.

Looking at his "Duel" stats for the serie A last year, I'm not overly impressed with his tackles and headers!

But I need to compare him with someone...

Squawka stats actually rate Bonucci the 8th best defender in Serie A last year. This only accounts for defensive actions, not goals scored.

The best... Ascerbi from Sassulo! Presumably given more opportunity to score higher due to more attacks from the opposition. But that means more chances of making mistakes too.

Defence only score
Francesco Acerbi score: 900 - Sassulo
Andrea Costa: 583 - Empoli
Barzagli: 577 - Juventus
Antonelli: 560 - Milan
Armando Izzo: 541 Genoa
Lorenzo Tonelli: 513 Empoli
Silva Duarte: 508 Empoli
Bonucci: 495 Juventus
Bonucci: 495

With all stats he's rated second behind Acerbi

The potential signing of Bonucci is surely with Kompany and his injury problems in mind. Will Kompany ever do a full season again? If he is absent, Bonucci can provide the experience and organisation that those younger CBs around him will need to improve. With Bonucci as one of the CBs, confidence should be sky high whoever else is alongside him.

Remember a wee while ago Hart was dropped for the begining of the season by pellers and he came back extra strong... bravo at 33 doesn't have any resale value and surely a shirt term fix. Pep may feel he can mould Hart if given a bit of time and someone real to push him...

Just throwing an alternative out there...

I don't think resale comes into it at all. He wants a keeper who is an outfielder as well and that is his only goal. It's clear he has very little faith in Joe to ever become one. I don't think Willy is that close either.

I reckon Bravo would be signed now if Ter Stegen was fit. Maybe Joe might just get a chance in the meantime but he'll have to make it good.

It is hard to argue against believing in what someone with Pep's record says.

Strong rumours we are after a second Barcelona player on top of Bravo, now we have guaranteed (almost) CL football (money). Speculation of course but Sergio Busquets mentioned. How good would that be?

@SiqueRodriguez

Seems that Ante Ćorić is very close to signing for us.

Nasri due in Turkey, Besiktas, soon.

Mangala out on loan with buy clause/option to Napoli.

Bony is looking forward to a new challenge at Stoke. If he can play every game and find the form that brought him to us in the first place, it might work. He was useless here.

Amazes me how we can go through an entire transfer window yet we have to wait to the very last day to do loan deals! Hart, Boney, Nasri and now Mangala gone. Only Ya Ya to go but no rumours there!

Hes honouring his £200,000+ a week contract, what a hero. A lovely agent as well.
