Title: The transfer thread
Post by: lee on June 04, 2021, 13:22:59
So who is being shown the door and who is coming in?

Out-Mendy and Sterling for me

Fernandinho released! Gutted.

That’s pissed me off more than the CL final!

Might have spoke too soon. He’s just been put on the PL list players to be released before next season.

There’s still time for him to sign a new contract! Come on City, make it happen!

I think Fernandinho will get another year. Mendy could well be gone. I think Sterling will stay, bad form but he's been a great player for us. A striker is a must but I'd prefer a younger player than Kane. We don't need a lot of players. We were very near to the quad.

The Kane/Haaland decision is a bit of a swings and roundabouts thing - Kane would be overpriced and has possible fitness concerns but equally Haaland doesn't strike me as a player who would stay more than 3 or 4 years at City before moving on, especially with Raiola as his agent.
Title: Re: The transfer thread
Post by: Stephen Paul on June 05, 2021, 08:58:12
Haaland impressed me when played against City

He floored Dias which is unheard of this season

Post by: KunDB on June 05, 2021, 16:34:34
Fernandinho will be still here next season.

I think we need best of the best. Mbappe, Neymar. That would be making a real statement.

We can’t be European champions shopping for players at M&S or John Lewis we need to shop at Fortnum and Masons and Harrods.

We will be lucky to attract the best. Despite our success in reaching the final, we are not yet feeding at the top table, (Thanks Pep).....

Sterling, Mahrez and Jesus to go. Mahrez I have never liked, a flat track bully. He was bobbins in the champions league. Sterling has two years left on his contract, I dont think he will renew. Jesus, works hard, but will always be a bit part player for us. If he stays, great, but should move on for his career.
Title: Re: The transfer thread
Post by: gavin on June 11, 2021, 15:48:47
If we let Jesus go then we need another striker and we don't need the cost when we are already in the market for one striker. Jesus does a good job and is a good worker.

Sterling
Silva
Jesus
Rodri

Ins

LB. Gosens
CF Kane
CF Haaland
WF Sancho
CM/WM Grealish

I like the list, but would bin Stones and keep Laporte.  I would like us to sign Bellingham, DM?
Title: Re: The transfer thread
Post by: Swiss on June 22, 2021, 16:52:59
But surely the Dias Stones partnership will continue.

Stones is coming out of his shell and into the form of his life.
He should get stronger and a better reading of the ball as he gets older. Not saying Laporte won't, but he hasn't clicked with Dias in the same way.

Also, my 1 criticism of Laporte is his communication. I don't think he does enough of it on the pitch.

Bellingham is a good option, but more traditional Box to box than DM isn't he?

Im not sure about Grealish. He's always going down under a challenge and it would break our play up.Free kick after free kick.
Title: Re: The transfer thread
Post by: gavin on June 22, 2021, 21:10:41
Why do people talk like we only need one striker and two centre halves? Football is a squad game. Injuries and poor form happen. We should keep the centre halves we have if we can. We should keep Jesus AND sign another striker.

My personal view of Raheem’s 2020/21 form is that he really missed David Silva, who was always able to pick him out with accurate angles around the opposition box. This was clearly something that Pep had worked on a lot with the pair of them, and was very effective. Obviously that’s gone for good. But Raheem hasn’t become a worse player; his way of contributing to the team will have to change. That’s Pep’s job; can’t believe he’s not working on it.

Yes Bellingham, round peg. Worried Stones will relapse, Laporte would improve virtually any team. If he was to go to Los Blancos or elsewhere abroad, fine. He wont stay as a bench warmer.
Sterling is playing well against some poor opposition. Wont get a kick in the next game, hope I am proved wrong.

Whatever happened that young Barcelona player ‘Messy’ who was definitely positively without a doubt leaving Barcelona. And, if the press are to be believed was definitely on his way to City this summer. Just as he was every summer he wanted to renegotiate his Barcelona contract. So beat this in mind with all the press transfer rumours buckshot this summer.

Kane and Grealish still both heavily linked. Can’t say I was impressed with either during the euros. Kane in particular looked leggy.

Be interesting to see if we sign anyone of any note this window. Traditionally after we’ve won the title we’ve recruited poorly.

Surprised it has not been billed as £160Bn.

The press is full of bullshit and we seldom ever find out the true cost or contract terms and conditions. From Spurs point of view the price has to be super-hyped to provide cover for selling their star player to an opponent. For all we know £60m cold be performance linked for phased payment, e.g. City winning CL could spark a payment, or Harry scoring 30 goals in a season could spark a payment. Who knows, and quite frankly I don't think City fans should particularly care and just leave finance to the club executives.

Manchester City are closing in on the £100m signing of Aston Villa skipper Jack Grealish.

A deal could be concluded in time for the England midfielder to play in the Community Shield against Leicester City on Saturday.

The move for the 25-year-old would make it a British record.

The fee for him would surpass the £89m Manchester United paid to re-sign France midfielder Paul Pogba from Juventus in 2016.

Grealish is set to make the move after returning to pre-season training w

Levy is a hardened negotiator striving to get every penny he can get. He would be very foolish to get stuck with a dissatisfied player/captain. It will go right to the wire and be sorted with clever wording and add ons written into the deal so it appears Levi has won.

Breaking news
Barcelona say Lionel Messi will not be staying at the club "because of financial and structural obstacles".

Messi, 34, has been a free agent since 1 July when his contract expired.

He agreed a new deal on reduced wages with club two weeks later, but it was dependent on Barca selling players to afford his salary.

"Both parties deeply regret that the wishes of the player and the club will ultimately not be fulfilled," the club said.

Barcelona said Messi was poised to extend his 21-year career with the club by signing the deal on Thursday, and blame La Liga for the failure to do so.

"Despite FC Barcelona and Lionel Messi having reached an agreement and the clear intention of both parties to sign a new contract today, this cannot happen because of financial and structural obstacles [Spanish La Liga regulations]," the club said.

Title: Re: The transfer thread
Post by: Gareth on August 07, 2021, 08:19:23
I don't think Sergio bears any blame at all for the financial situation at Barcelona, and when it came to the crunch Messi agreed a new contract that would have kept him at the club on a lower salary. I don't think "the Argies" are responsible for the catastrophic financial management that has led to Barcelona's current woes. It's not the players' fault.
Title: Re: The transfer thread

Does anyone know why Barca can’t keep Messi or sign aguero? If Messi is on a reduced contract what’s the difference to last season? This all seems very strange. PSG seem the winners though, if they do sign Messi they have the best team on the planet and should be certs for the CL. Which won’t make Pep very happy.

This video briefly explains what's happened.

https://youtu.be/g6AOWHsO1Ck

It sounds like Barca knew they couldn't afford Messi but wanted special treatment from the league. They probably thought with them being one of the big guns and Messi being the biggest draw for the league then they would get that. Fair play to the league if that's the case.

Apparently Messi has signed for PSG but I'll believe that when I see it. He's making an announcement on Sunday.

I'm glad City finally managed to keep their distance from him this time.

But yes if Messi does actually leave Barca, then I reckon he'll take Kun with him.

Or maybe Kun will come back to Pep? Hmmm.

Blue Blooded Manc be in no doubt this is all part of a battle for control of the mega football tv/advertising money. It is linked to the Super League which Barcelona, Real Madrid and Juventus are the key agents. Lionel Messi has arrived at Turf Moor to discuss a possible transfer to Burnley following his failure to secure a new contract with Barcelona. The 6 time Ballon d’Or winner is available as a free agent.

Mixer
Dyche
“It was a good talk,” Sean Dyche told Soccer on Sunday. “I explained my vision, and he vomited into a nearby peddle bin. But once he overcame the shock, I think he relished the sound of endless balls being pumped into the mixer, aerial duels, living on scraps and chasing lost causes in the channels.”

“Obviously money could be an issue,” said the 50 year-old. “The chairman is prepared to push the boat out and give Lionel a generous dry cleaning allowance, and use of a 2014 Ford Fiesta on the weekends. So long as he throws a few quid of petrol into it.”

“The ball’s in Lionel’s court now,” he added.

Positive vibes going around about the Harry Kane transfer.

From my point of view the fact that Spurs and Levy have not told City to do one, he’s our player is the biggest clue a deal can and probably will be done. So it’s all down to money, agreeing a transfer fee.

We might not have to wait until the deadline day after all, could be that a deal is done very soon after City’s game against Spurs is out of the way.

I’m buzzing with hope and excitement as the outlook will be so good if this transfer happens.

I get the feeling that in a a different team setup Jesus could flourish. I think it is very hard for any striker to excel in a Pep team, defend, do midfield duties etc. I’m hoping Kane is not unduly affected by this.

The Guardian reports (https://www.theguardian.com/football/2021/aug/12/manchester-city-ready-to-pay-150m-to-sign-harry-kane-from-tottenham) that City are prepared to pay 150m euros for Kane. Maybe this is a smart move, if City can afford that much and it is within FFP. Either Spurs accept, and Kane moves; or Spurs don't accept, which seems likely to mightily piss off their star player, and also to discourage other players from signing long-term contracts with Spurs. Levy is always portrayed as a tough negotiator, but there must be a way to put him on the spot... and anyway, if he's so great, how come Spurs are so crap?

Reports are either £127 mill for Kane with add ons to make it £147 million.

I still don’t believe we’ll go that high but It begs the question, if we are willing to go that high, I would hope we’d offer that for Harland. Dortmund said they won’t sell, but next season he has a much lower release clause (80 mill I think?) So they would be daft not to accept such a big offer now.

Max Allegri, Juventus coach, has confirmed that Ronaldo is leaving Juventus.

QuoteI'm absolutely not disappointed, because Cristiano took his own decision. Everything comes and goes in life. At Juventus, we had Omar Sivori, Michel Platini, Alessandro Del Piero, Zinedine Zidane, Gianluigi Buffon, some great champions and even better managers. It's one of the laws of life. But Juventus will always be here, that's the most important thing, the most solid foundation to get the results. He was here for three years, he gave his contribution, he put himself at Juventus' disposal, and now he's leaving and life goes on as it should.

Grealish a great signing but even my deceased granny could have bought him at the buyout clause terms.

Otherwise, this transfer window has been a massive embarrassment and failure for City. Not so unusual we seem totally inept and inferior in this regard to other big clubs.

Title: Re: The transfer thread
Post by: gavin on August 27, 2021, 15:41:13
Hmmmmm, I'm not sure that the club that has won three out of the last four titles should be described as inept and inferior in the transfer market. We make mistakes and sometimes struggle to get the players that we want like every other club. But the measure of success in the transfer market is titles.

It seems to me that we had two main targets, got one (Grealish) and failed to get the other (Kane). With Levy refusing to negotiate at all for Kane then I fail to see what else could have been done there. Maybe there was an issue with targetting Kane in the first place, that I could agree with to an extent. But if it was him who Pep really wanted then we had to do what we could to get him.

The Ronaldo thing is a bit of a joke really. A lot of press talk and maybe we would have taken him if he was offered to us but really I suspect that we've just been used to get him out of Juventus. I'm not upset at 'losing out' there. 36 and not really a part of our plans.

I'm glad the window is shut and it makes me laugh that newsnow is still full of links about transfers but now talking about who we will be signing in January and even next summer. The last couple of matches we have been fine without a striker but there is bound to be another game like Spuds away which will be followed by an outcry of they should have bought a striker. We should remember that many teams with strikers draw a blank. The ultimate measure of our season will be the title. If we retain it then we've done a good job.

Grealish will help us. He already seems to be adding a different, more dynamic option. He will grow over the coming months too. So far, he has looked a top notch signing to me.

Don't get me wrong, I'd love to have seen us sign a striker. But not at any cost. We must win the title. If we do then we were definitely better not to pay over the odds for Kane or Ronaldo. Even if we don't win the title then it still might not be so bad in the long term. We refused to pay the money for VVD and it probably cost us the title in 2020. But then we got Ruben and won in 2021.

I think Grealish will be a great player, but I don’t think attacking midfielder was a position we really needed to strengthen. We clearly wanted Kane, so not securing a striker has to be seen as a fail and the entire pursuit seemed fake to me. The management team also clearly don’t see left back as a problem position.

Let’s see what Pep can do this season with them, as Gav said that’s the real test.

The PL will be much more competitive and I hate to say it but Ronaldo could be a game changer for them.

The CL will be tough again and PSG should walk it given their recruiting this summer.

Not getting Kane was a clear failure and I put it down to our seemingly strict policy of assessing a players price then refusing to pay above this assessment.

That’s fine with most players but when you want the very top players you need to be flexible and expect to pay a premium. Go in hard and early should be the lesson learned for future bids for top players eg Haaland type players.

So lets be clear here. How much would you have paid for Kane? There has to be a limit. Sticking to a sensible policy is not failure.

Even if we had no limit, there is no guarantee that Spurs would have sold anyway. Look at the Madrid bid for Mbappe, which seems crazy money for a player into the last season of his contract. Still, PSG said no.

We have to be realisitic. Sometimes, we won't be able to get better players than we have.

We were dealing from the start with Levy who prides himself on being a hard nut. With three years remaining on Kane’s contract, and no buyout clause (family agents! - amateurs), it was always in Levy’s hands. We had little choice but to pay his price, like it or not.

Only other alternative drop Kane as a target. Waiting so late in window to make a final bid and no other iron in the fire was a failure (of strategy).

Let’s hope lessons are learned.

Still think we have a seismic squad and will win PL.

Pep was always prepared not to sign a striker. He was clear about that throughout. He's not going to sign a player for the sake of it.

I’m sure that’s correct, Pep is addicted to midfielders (and thankfully success).
