Businesses want special arrangements to allow work visas to EU drivers. I doubt very much that the Tories have the stomach for it even it not doing it means food shortages.

It's the most retarded political decision made during my life time so far, probably ever, with a bunch of incompetent wankers trying to execute the idea. It won't ever be anything other than a huge mess.

So a month later, they are finally extending immigration for drivers. The obvious, too late. They are an absolute disgrace. They should have done it before petrol stations were closing and shelves were empty. It's not going to be an instant fix. We all have to pay for their pig headed stupidity and that of those who voted for them and Brexit.

I will be running against the tide here. I voted to leave. I was hugely in favour to start with. Mind changed over the years.
I always expected to be worse off to start with. I think you might find that labour shortages are also present in the EU. There are shortages of HGV drivers across many countries of the EU. Transport Intelligence say there are 400,000 fewer HGV drivers than are needed across Europe.
As soon as media say there maybe a shortage of anything, from bog rolls to petrol, it becomes a self fulfilling prophecy. Early last week, no queues at petrol stations near me, plenty of fuel. Later in the week and a couple of stories later, panic.
Of course like much of life, we see everything through our own perspective.

Fair points, but it does mostly seem like we've shot ourselves in the foot.  I'm yet to see one benefit from all this mess.  The Greeks voted to leave didn't they and their Government decided it was a terrible idea and didn't see it through.  Was there for a month in Sept and everything seems to be working, unlike here at the moment.   ::)

Thought you voted Brexit lad?  Must be my terrible memory kicking in again.  My uncle voted Brexit to get out from under the EU 'bureaucracy' and recently told me he wants to retire in Crete. Doesnt' make any sense  :D :-\ ::)

It would appear that nationalised utility companies in Europe are major share holders within out privatised utility companies and have subsidised their customers bills by profiting from ours.

SHIT

Not much of a fan of privatisation off any strategic assets such as water, electricity railways, etc. but done properly it can be made to work to some extent.

The trouble is it wasn't done properly, insufficient regulation & controls to prevent exploitation of the monopoly position they offer private companies. So this profiteering in mega excess is hardly a surprise.

As well as foreign investors benefiting extravagantly, I can't help suspect that millionaire/billionaire cabinet and ruling Conservative ministers & MPs might just be sharing some of these extraordinary windfall profits, from mis-regulation, themselves conveniently through back door channels not transparent to us members of the public.

No evidence to support that suspicion mind just my hyper sceptical brain in overdrive.

Water, electricity and railways should never have been privatised. I was never a fan of privatisation but in industries where there is no real competition it is a particular problem. If you want to change your water company, you can't unless you move house. Your trains are run by a single franchise holder for the line in most cases. For the market to have any impact there has to be a market. The regulators have been far too friendly to the companies. The companies have been allowed to take massive profits without investing enough in infrastructure and we are left in a right mess in all three industries. The Tories should be ashamed of it but rest assured that they will wave a small tax cut at the electorate and we will be left with more of the same shit. Companies allowed to profit for pumping shit into the rivers and the poor made to pay for decades for the new debt caused by the power price cap.

What about Post Office Telephones, formally known as the GPO.

All paid for by the British tax payer over 100 years ago plus. When the telephone side was privatised by Thatcher. Even though it was it was oversubscribed in the UK by by residents, over 50% was sold exclusively on foreign exchanges such as New York and Tokyo.

In addition, the sales did not take into account the value of the the infrastructure, countless millions/billions have been wasted trying to replicate it.

I've had to stop using UK companies on most of our projects from both a commercial and logistical sense.
