News now reporting that Oldham athletic are going to offer him a contract . Yesterday it was a team in Malta Hib's today it's the Latics
They say they are prepared to weather the backlash
Which ever side of the argument you are on ,can he really ever play football again in our oh so politically correct country  ?

Ludo

It'll be interesting to see what happens after the inevitable backlash from Oldham's fans and sponsors.

Personally I wouldn't piss on him if he was on fire.

It's not just that , you will have crowds of anti rape protesters / womens rights etc causing havoc outside the grounds , fan protests inside and out  possibly player boycotts and legal challenges
The club just don't realise what they are letting themselves in for , they just see the chance to get a half decent player on the cheap

gavin

About time he is allowed to get on with playing football and earning a living somewhere.

andy1966

Deal looks like it might be off ,Oldham already bottling it
didn't know he played for City

over 20,000 eh, didnt know oldham had gates that good or is it just the same people that got involved for no reason like with sheff united

citoeast

I would imagine the Nationwide BS would be reviewing sponsorship of Oldham in light of this.

This is football's inner workings at work, protecting the innocent (one of their own) and dismissing the courts of the land. They may have found him guilty after a fair and open hearing, but we find him innocent after a few backroom chats and after all he is a decent bloke.

Football yet again with its head buried in the sand. With the golden egg and privileged status comes responsibility.

Ched is guilty until proven otherwise and should keep his head down and rehabilitate in the background.

He can play football if he wants but any professional club taking him on needs to carefully consider the damage to their image and the message being sent to supporters, especially young supporters.

He has shown no remorse and therefore deserves no pity or privilege. He should await the outcome of his appeal before seeking the limelight again. In the meantime there are plenty of other jobs he can apply for. If his further appeal fails as his original appeal did, he needs to admit guilt publically as part of rehabilitating his behaviour and attitude.

Football needs to also examine its attitude and morals (if it has any).

bry the guy

The thing is if he was signing for Liverpool.rags,Spuds, arse or Chavs he had his chance with us would he be treated and looked at the same way.

goat

meppen-walters scored the weekend, he is allowed to play and they know he actually did it

Ludo

But I doubt meppen-Walters actually set out to do it.

I don't think anyone's actually stopping him working, just most right thinking people don't want him in such a high profile position, (cue the "Oldham's not high profile" jokes) and I'd imagine he's a fair bit away from being eligible for benefits.

Jealous of Evans? I doubt it, I don't suppose anyone desires to be a rapist.

But that's part of the problem with a high profile job like a professional sportsman, people will look up to him, they'll cheer or chant his name when he scores and that, for me, is wrong. I'm sure there's a fairly anonymous job out there somewhere he could do, in fact I'm certain there's already rapists and murderers already doing mundane jobs every day of the week.

Yes any other job that does not put him as a role model, certainly not working with young children or those considered vulnerable. He has clearly shown his predatory instincts but no remorse and no consideration for his victim.

As Ludo says I doubt anyone of sane mind and basic level morals would be jealous of such a vile character as a convicted rapist.

no more than your cockish thing about footballer being some magical job that should be a privilege

been others convicted of rape that have been allowed back in the game, so why not ched too

reddishblue

I think more security checks are required on people who serve burgers. They might have gone for shit and not washed their hands.

goat

but what if ched rapes the baps?

didnt think it through did they

Ludo

Playing a high profile professional sport isn't a privilege but the adulation is. No one cares who puts the tins of beans on a tesco shelf, no one cheers when a bin man puts the rubbish in the back of his lorry, no one runs after a brickie  looking for his autograph. But those things do happen to someone like Evans and if a rapist has gone back into a high profile team then that's wrong too; it's only because this case is current that it's Evans' name that being used.

and yet the world didnt end when marlon king and graham rix came back

also nobody has to run after ched for his name on a bit of paper, its not like its a law that you must act a fawning twot over someone that can play a bit. if people are not happy with him playing thats fine, dont cheer when he scores...see how long that lasts

Ludo

It's no point arguing the toss it's obvious we're not going to agree on the subject and Evans isn't worth the time spent doing it.

goat

this was turning into the same thread as last time

ched wasnt a bad player at that level but a couple of years out will have ruined him. if he signs for a club i could see him being binned after a season or two anyway

gavin

What is 20,000 signatures on an online petition? Fuck all. How many people have an internet connection and can click? Okay there's one or two exempt from Norn Ireland cos they can't manage it but otherwise it is a lot.

Footballers are not role models. If any child is brought up to think that anything that a footballer does is golden then it is the parents that should be locked up. Some footballers are role models, some are wankers - like any other profession, just the percentages vary. Of course every footballer that plays for the rags is a complete cnut though.

Ludo

No ones taking away his right to work though that's the thing. It's just that most would rather not see him work in such a high profile environment.

It's easy to sit there an say that it's only the money that people see but that's bollox.

Perhaps 'role model' is the wrong phrase but footballers are looked up to by young kids, idolised even, and I'd much prefer a convicted rapist wasn't there for that to happen.

Strong words Swiss, pointing the accusing finger at Andy as if he has done wrong.

Lets talk straight this piece of scum Ched Evans raped an incapacitated women and is an unrepentant rapist.
Tthank God he is now paying the price for his vile behaviour and rightly so. He should not be allowed to do what he wants now he is still serving the final years of his sentence, on licence. He has forfeited his rights to privilege in society.

He should not be allowed any job which would make him a role model plain and simple. He should show genuine remorse which he hasn't, then rehabilitation may be possible, rehabilitation is not possible without genuine remorse.

If I was Oldham I would be seriously worried about this unrepentant rapist repeating his act and the implications for the club if that happens or if there is even an allegation it has happened.

He has to be reintegrated into society but not until he is rehabilitated and he is no longer a serious threat to members of society. He has shown no signs of rehabilitation just outrage that he was caught and convicted.

Oh Swiss he has not been reformed - that is clear, he has not paid his dues - he is on early release and licence and he has a right to find work but not any work, e.g. with children or vulnerable people, not me says that its society and the law says that.

It is you who needs to rethink and stop blaming others like Andy.

I said if he was a plumber I wouldn't employ him and I suspect many on here would either if they were honest.

Where would you draw a line. If he's ok to play for a league one team would he be ok to coach one, or coach an academy team, coach under 10s, coach a ladies team, be a physio?

I'm not making the rules but one thing I can say for certain is that rape is not to be taken lightly nor is it a matter to be joked about, in a lot of ways it's possibly a worse crime than murder and for that I can't accept that he might someday pop up live on tv flaunting his notoriety.

Perhaps those so passionate to stand up for rapist Ched would also demand the right for Harold Shipman to carry on as a GP when he gets out. After all he has an absolute right to work after rehabilitation.

As said Ched is still serving the second non custodial part of his sentence and there are loads of restrictions on what he can do and were he can work. Football is not a restricted job I presume.

Why any club would embrace the risk of taking him on and potential consequences of him reoffending in any form God only knows, but clubs are greedy always looking for a cheapie 'quality' player even if they have been proven time and again to be faulty goods. They just never learn the lessons from others mistakes, and from their own. Greed wins.
