The Bridge - Denmark/Swedish one was excellent - up there with one of my fave noir type series.

As you know Nimmers, Breaking Bad is unsurpassable in every way, but a good runner up which is immersing, irritating and highly watchable AND makes you want to watch the entire series in one binge fest is, Damages with Glenn Close.  Also got an excellent Ted Danson in it.  Highly recommended, and the signature choon is annoyingly good too!  (It's on Netflix).

Swiss

I found breaking bad hit and miss. Was bloody long and drawn out in places, mainly the skylar story arc.

Just checked it's on Netflix and it is, AND 5 seasons!  Will deffo try it Nimz and report back.

Goateee:  re-tried Always Sunny, but still 'didn't get it'!

Swiss:  Surprised at your lack of enthuse for BB - I've watched it circa 5 times now and love it.  Anyone spot the Cameo of Walt at Jesse's drug party - was deffo him as one of his druggie mates.
I also found, as I don't concentrate enough, that reading the indepth storylines for each episode really helps.  For instance I didn't notice that it was Mike who had injected the legless Twin at the hossie to finish him off - it literally showed a  two second screen shot of Mike putting something in a bin.
I've probably missed loads more stuff - but hey!  :P

Swiss

There are characters that I did like:

Obvs Walt
I liked Gus
Hank I thought was an engaging character, liked his DEA storyline with the Turtle episode...

After series 2 didn't much care for Jessie

We used to go there a lot Dizz, North Wales is only 40 minutes from Stockport on the M56, love the place, Snowden, Criccieth, Llandudno, Llyn Peninsula is like Cornwall, anyway Im Australian (when it suits)and like the French, they dont hate us :D

Seriously though we never had a problem with people there, its full of English anyway, would buy in Cornwall but its too dear

That's fair enough Nimmers - I guess we all speak as we find and it is a different part of Wales completely.  Have to say, most Welsh people are hilarious, insane, funny and welcoming, it was just 'the few' that ruined it for me.

I hope Series 2 goes out on Netflix or iPlayer before Series 3 starts.  Again, I missed it first time round, have seen Series 1 and found it extremeley well acted and written etc.  My threshold for violence seems to have increased successfully since Breaking Bad, though I still find it very traumatising.  Must be a man-thang to enjoy the violence side.

They showed series 1 again on BBCTV before showing series 2. I would imagine they'd do same or at least put it on iplayer before series 3

Some of you are old enough to remember The Sweeney.
Was it an episode or a full length movie, where there was a brilliant bit of acting/dialogue from Jack....
he opens the glove compartment and discovers an apple, and he rants at the new vegetarian driver, that he wants it back filled with ham sandwiches and mars bars....  I want to see that clip again - I haven't seen it for 30 years plus!!!

Question;
Why is it legal to record free to air TV on a VCR or HD recorder but illegal to download a show that has been on free to air TV ?

Because when you watch (and record it) from a TV transmission the creators of the show have been paid for their creation (by the TV company, its advertisers etc) "Free to Air" TV might be free to you, but the programmes they show have been paid for.

If you illegally down load it the programme creators don't get a cent.

Thanks M'lud, I get what youre saying

but if its been on free to air already the creators have been paid for it and cant reasonably expect any further money after its been thrown out into the public domain

I mean I could record it and give it to somebody who didnt watch it when it was broadcast, so would they be watching it illegally, seeing as theyre not paying for it ?

Well that's the point - they do expect further money. These shows are expensive to make.

I'm no expert on copyright law, but my understanding is that would be illegal.

You home record - for home use. You can show your friend the recording in your house - that's OK - but you can't give him a copy to take away!  There are also limits (I think) on how many people you could show the recording to at any one time in your house before the event would becoming legally defined as a "Public Performance" - at which point you'd be breaking the law again!

Always been a grey area this one. In the UK back in the 50's and 60's you were supposed to pay for a licence before you could home record anything off the radio. I can remember my dad - always conscientious - had one, for his large classical music library of reel-to-reel tapes he recorded off Radio 3. But when cassette recorders came along everyone could easily record everything and the UK government eventually gave up the licence as unenforceable and unworkable.
