Whisky
« on: April 10, 2018, 09:18:43 »
Anyone a fan? A bit into the single malts and just spent a week on Islay in Scotland. Some nice walks (to and from distilleries!).

We went to 6, Ardbeg, Lagavulin, Laphroaig, Bowmore, Kilchoman, and Bruichladdich.

Anyone got a favourite dram?

If its got a percentage on the bottle it'll do me.

Went to Gdansk couple of months ago and got off me tits on some proper good vodka. The strip clubs were proper scary. Stay away from the big red mushyrooms.

That about sums up my jolly holiday.

So whisky you say?

Currently working my way through a bottle Kilchoman - very, very, nice. Will certainly get another.

Also got a bottle of Talisker on the go (only distillery on Skye I think?) and some very potent local stuff from Tasmania for 'special occasions' (Nant - 83% and expensive!! Company recently went out of business after a major financial scandal, but other Tasmanian single malts getting a lot of international plaudits these days)

Some of my favourite whiskies come out of the Tobermory Distillery on the Isle of Mull. Especially fond of their Ledaig, a bottle of which is, for me, an essential companion to every cold, damp Melbourne winter. Very peaty though - so not to everyone's taste.

The Kilchoman stuff is nice, but the Laphroaig and Bruichladdich ones really impressed.  We ended up pretty well sozzled in Bruichladdich...accidentally of course.

If you like the peaty stuff the Bruichladdich Port Charlotte 2007 CC:01 is lovely stuff.  Also discovered the Laphroaig PX cask (Pedro Ximenez Sherry cask) - bloody amazing stuff.  Came back with a couple of bottles of each!

When the reserves start running low I'll get a bottle of Ledaig in!  Any particular one?

I can only find their 'standard' 10 year old Ledaig down here in Aus - but by all means try the older and more exotic ones if you have the pockets. Next time I am in the UK / Scotland I am determined to try some of sherry cask Ledaigs they do.

It's not Whisky it's Whiskey.

Jamesons Redbreast 12 year old or if your feeling flush they do a 21 year old.

Whiskey is Irish and Whisky Scottish i thought?

Didn't think that Jamesons made a decent whiskey for some reason! I'll keep the Redbrest in mind, ta. Only other Irish one I've tried is Bushmills which was alright.

wiki will solve this
https://rationalwiki.org/wiki/Fun:Whisky

"Irish whiskey
Irish Whiskey is a cheap way to get really drunk, really fast. God pretty much only invented Jameson to get cheap people and alcoholics drunk quickly with little investment. As a basic rule, cheap Irish is better than cheap Scotch but expensive Irish is only mildly better than cheap Irish while expensive Scotch is like manna from heaven."

Drinking Scotch is like supporting the rags.

People think it's great until they discover the real thing.

Went up to the lakes recently and not long finished 'The One'  whisky by the Lakes Distillery. They also do a vodka and gin, the vodka is good, not a fan of gin but the missus says it's nice.

Jameson's, really smooth flavour and Irish, so strictly it should be in a "Whiskey" thread.  ;D

Just decided to try and get into Whisky. First few glasses were rank but I powered through. By the end of the bottle, a speyside from Aldi (it actually gets really good reviews before and laughs) i has stared to like the taste. Read up some more and decided on an Irish whiskey.  Bought and £37 bottle of Teelings from Tesco. Very pricy but absolutely lovely. Thoroughly recommend it and the Aldi one actually.

I’m having to drink it with a bit of water though, does that make me a big Jessie?

Got a chrimbo hamper from a supplier Friday which contained a bottle of Greenore 18 year old single grain.  I usually give away the spirits as I hardly drink but this one is worth keeping!

I used to work with Kiwi lad that used to by rare single malts on auction sites.  He used to bring back a bottle or 2 and we'd have a tasting night every Friday.  Used to go the whole hog, proper glasses and he'd explain each one.  Lush!
